Dear Parent / Guardian:

National TV Turnoff Week is being held Monday, April 21st through Sunday, April 27th.  The purpose of this week is to encourage children and adults to turn off the television and to promote a healthier lifestyle.  By participating, you and your family may adopt healthy habits, such as exercising more, reading more, and enjoying more time together as a family.

Did you know:

*By age 5, the average American child has already spent more time watching TV than he or she will spend earning a college degree?

*On average, children in the United States will spend more time in front of the TV (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours)?

*The television set is on an average of 43 hours per week in the average household?

*40% of Americans frequently or always watch TV during dinner?

*The proportion of overweight children has doubled, due, in part, to sedentary activities such as television viewing?

Television remains one of the most powerful influences in our world.  Unfortunately, excessive television and other screen watching (video games, computer, etc.) can undermine family time, harm reading and school performance, encourage violence, and promote sedentary lifestyles, which increases obesity.  Let’s work together to make healthier activity choices!

I would challenge and encourage you and your family to turn off all screens (television, computer, and video games) during this week and promote positive screen - free activities (listed on the back).  If your child participates in this week, please fill in what activity your child substituted for TV and other screens, and return the attached form by Tuesday, April 29th.  We will randomly draw 3 student winners.  Thank you for your support in this important event.  Activities and Sign Off Sheet can be found here.

Sincerely,

Miss Myers
