At
times, we see students who demonstrate exemplary academic skills and appear to
need additional challenging work beyond the general curriculum. If this describes your child, or a child in your
classroom, you make want to inquire about having the student screened for the
Enrichment Program.
Pennsylvania
State Regulations regarding identification of a student as mentally gifted
state that a student should demonstrate and IQ of 130 or above. Determination of eligibility, however, should
not be based on IQ score alone. Other
assessment techniques include achievement test scores, rates of acquisition and
retention, demonstrated achievement, performance, or expertise, high level
thinking skills, academic creativity, leadership, etc. Students with IQ’s slightly under 130 (mid
to upper 120’s) may be determined to be eligible if multiple criteria indicate
that the student demonstrates characteristics of a student with mental
giftedness.
Using
a brief measure of intelligence, the district can obtain information estimating
the level on which a student is functioning.
The screening takes 15-20 minutes.
If, on the screening instrument, a student obtains a score of 125 or
higher, the district will proceed with recommending a Gifted Multidisciplinary
Evaluation (GMDE).
Parents
who suspect their child is gifted may request a Gifted Multidisciplinary
Evaluation at any time, but there is a limit of one request per school
term.
